ALUMINUM VS STEEL: DOES IT MATTER FOR HAIL REPAIR?

Expert insights from Houston's trusted paintless dent repair and hail damage specialists.

Published September 7, 2026 | By Pro PDR Team

Most vehicles are still primarily steel, but aluminum panels have become increasingly common on trucks, EVs, and some luxury models. If your vehicle has a mix of the two, it's worth understanding how that affects a hail repair.

How Steel Responds to Hail and PDR

Steel is relatively forgiving — it flexes under impact and generally returns to shape predictably under PDR pressure, which is why the majority of dent repair technique and pricing assumes steel as the baseline.

How Aluminum Is Different

Aluminum work-hardens faster than steel, meaning repeated pressure in the same area can stiffen the metal instead of smoothing it, increasing the risk of stretching or cracking if it's pushed too aggressively. It takes a lighter touch, different tool geometry, and more frequent checks under the light board to repair correctly.

Which Vehicles Have Aluminum Panels

It varies by model and trim — the Ford F-150's hood, doors, and bed on many trims, several Tesla panels, and hoods or fenders on some luxury and performance vehicles are common examples. Many vehicles mix aluminum and steel panels on the same body.

Does It Change the Repair Timeline or Price?

Aluminum repairs generally take more time per dent than an equivalent steel repair, which is why we price aluminum work individually rather than at a flat per-dent rate. The insurance claims process itself is identical either way.

How to Know What Your Vehicle Has

If you're not sure whether a panel is steel or aluminum, our technicians identify it during your free inspection and explain the approach before any work begins.
