Hail damage itself generally isn't reported to Carfax unless a shop, insurer, or state title system logs it — comprehensive claims don't automatically create a public record the way a salvage or flood title does. But two things connected to hail damage absolutely can affect what a buyer or dealer sees: a documented repair history, and a paint-thickness gauge in an appraiser's hand.

What Actually Gets Reported

Vehicle history reports pull from title records, insurance total-loss data, and some shop or auction reporting. A routine comprehensive hail claim that results in a repair, not a total loss, typically doesn't generate a Carfax entry on its own. Where it can show up is if the damage was severe enough to trigger a salvage or rebuilt title, which is a separate, much higher damage threshold than a typical hail claim.

The Bigger Risk: A Detectable Repaint

Even without a Carfax entry, any appraiser or private buyer can check for repair history in about ten seconds with a $50 paint-thickness gauge. A body shop repair that fills and repaints a dented panel reads noticeably thicker than the factory coat around it — an easy, obvious tell that lowers negotiating leverage even if no report ever mentions it.

There's no filler, no primer, no repaint — which means nothing for a thickness gauge to detect and nothing to disclose that wasn't already true of the car. What to Do If You're Planning to Sell Soon

Get hail damage repaired with PDR before you list or trade in the vehicle. Unrepaired dents are visually obvious and will cost you more in a lower offer than the deductible would have cost to fix it properly.
