PDR BEFORE OR AFTER CERAMIC COATING?

Expert insights from Houston's trusted paintless dent repair and hail damage specialists.

Published September 14, 2026 | By Pro PDR Team

If your vehicle needs both dent repair and paint correction or ceramic coating, the order you do them in isn't arbitrary — getting it backwards typically means redoing coating work you already paid for.

Why PDR Should Come First

Paintless dent repair works the metal from behind the panel, which involves direct contact and pressure on the painted surface from the technician's tools and hands during the process. While PDR doesn't damage a factory finish, working on top of a fresh ceramic coating risks disturbing or marring that coating layer before it's had a chance to fully cure and bond.

What Happens If You Coat First

If a panel is coated and then needs a dent repaired afterward, the coating in that area will likely need to be reapplied once the repair is finished, since the PDR process on that specific panel can affect the coating's surface. That's an avoidable extra cost if the order is planned correctly from the start.

The Right Sequence

Get any dent repair, including hail restoration, finished first. Once the panels are back to their final shape, paint correction (if needed) and ceramic coating go on last, sealing a surface that won't need to be disturbed again for routine dent work.

What If You Already Have a Coating and Get New Damage?

It happens — a coated vehicle isn't immune to a parking lot ding or a hailstorm. In that case, PDR still repairs the underlying dent normally; just plan on a coating touch-up for the affected panel afterward rather than the whole vehicle.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Before. PDR should be completed first, since the repair process involves direct contact with the panel that can disturb a coating that hasn't had time to fully cure.

PDR still repairs the dent normally. You'll likely need a coating touch-up on that specific panel afterward, rather than redoing the entire vehicle.

It can disturb a coating on the specific panel being worked on, which is why the recommended order is dent repair first, coating last, whenever both are needed.
